Well we had another slowish start to the day. It seems the closer we get to home the slower we are of a morning especially the pack up mornings. We had 361km to drive today. The kids said see ya to some more friends they had made while at Denham (they took over the park both nights with spotlight tag and hide and seek).
Our drive towards Kalbarri saw us have a stop at the Billabong roadhouse for a wee stop and to grab a drink. The kids and I found a few different signs and took their photo with their faces in a character board. It was a good stretch of their legs as we still had just over half the distance to drive. Also a good chance for Strick to stretch with his not so good back.
It was a nice drive heading into Kalbarri with many of the wild flowers out (although we think it was close to the end of the season). We chose to go straight into Kalbarri and get set up and we would go for a drive while here to look around the National Park. We chose to stay at a park that had a jumping pillow to allow the kids to release some energy while here and be able to feel that they weren't in each other's pockets the whole time.
Our first full day in Kalbarri we drove out to the National Park to see The Loop, Natures Window and a couple of lookouts. The first Gorge we looked at we weren't all that impressed as we compared it to ones we had seen at Karijini and even Kakadu. (We had another couple that had recognised us from Fitzroy Crossing saying the same thing). When we got around to Natures Window it was a different story with some of the views being pretty spectacular. It was a struggle for Hannah to get motivated to walk back out so an ice cream was dangled as a carrot. (Hannah is over walking she has decided). We eventually got back to the car and returned back to Kalbarri (it was mid afternoon by this stage and kids hadn't had lunch as we weren't expecting to be as long as we were). We found a cafe that sold smoothies so the kids had a smoothie for lunch. Jacob continuing to judge them as we were travelling. This was one was up there and was pretty good. It was then back to the caravan park where the kids had a swim and a play on the jumping pillow.
Our second day at Kalbarri we had told the kids it was about what they wanted to do (another way we got them through the walking the day before).
It started with me (Strick had a sleep in) walking the kids to the foreshore where they got to feed the pelicans. They are pelicans that a local used to feed every morning then when he left town the pelicans kept coming so local volunteers actually took over the feeding and have turned it into an attraction.
After feeding the pelicans I took the kids to a different cafe where they tried a different smoothie and iced chocolates. The rest of the day the kids went swimming, played on the play equipment including the jumping pillow and just chilled. For tea that night we took the kids to have fish and chips and we sat in the park. After the sun had set and they had had enough we walked back to camp via the supermarket where they got an ice cream for desert.
The next day we were heading for Geraldton where we were planning to stay with my cousin and her family.
Our trip to Geraldton was going to be via the coastal drive.
The coastal drive was an experience and absolutely amazing. The wildlife we have seen throughout our trip has been nothing short of amazing and pretty special. On our drive and trips in and out of the car (3 hours to do about 60km) we saw a Whale and her calf just lying off the coast, dolphins (numerous pods) and a huge pod of whales that swam in towards the cliff we were standing on and were playing around and swimming back and forth along the coastline. Needless to say the majority of the 3 hours was spent watching sea life. We did also see a natures bridge and some spectacular cliff lines along this part of the coast. We also stopped further down and saw a pink lake that seemed to be used for the mining of minerals.
We eventually arrived at Geraldton where we found where we were staying. We dropped the trailer off and went for a drive around to see what we could find. Lunch was also on the cards as we had only stopped for a snack.
